FRENCH MEAT GETS THE BACKING OF SUPERMARKET CHAINS

Three chains have undertaken to pay farmers one euro more per kilo of meat, in other words about €500 extra for each carcass, in return for “Made in France” quality standards.

To understand why farmers should be paid a fair price, watch this report on a farmer who has meat breeds of cattle on his farm and who, for the past two years, has been working at a loss; his sale price is €3.50 a kilo, whereas his cost price is €4.20 a kilo.

The arrangements regarding how meat prices are set are starting to change in favour of farmers.
“core range” partnership has been put in place between supermarket chains and livestock farmers who have signed up to the deal.

In return for high-quality French meat, from meat breeds, which is fattened in a natural way, several chains have undertaken to pay farmers one euro more per kilo of meat, taking farmers’ cost prices into account. Farmers are thus now paid about €500 extra per carcass.

The aim of the “core range” partnership is that all chains will commit to the deal and that “core range” meat will eventually make up at least 50% of the meat supplies of each chain.

ActiMeat has also committed to playing its part, in conjunction with food manufacturers and farmers, in a controlled supply chain which promotes the high quality of French products, in an offering of creatively-enhanced products.
